Head saws have large blades used for rough cutting and shaping logs. Twin circular-head saw rigs such as scrag saws must meet the specifications for single circular head saws. 1910.265(e)(2)(iv)

Hazard/Solutions:

Contact with the moving blade or machinery may occur.

  • Circular head saws must use safety guides that can be readily adjusted without the use of hand tools. 1910.265(e)(2)(iii)(b)

Logs may kick back and strike the operator.

  • Do not operate circular head saws at speeds in excess of those specified by the manufacturer. Maximum speed must be etched on the saw. 1910.265(e)(2)(iii)(a)
  • Where live rolls are not used behind the head saw, equip circular sawmills with a spreader wheel or splitter. 1910.265(e)(2)(iii)(d)

Flying particles or loose materials may strike workers.

  • Place a screen or other device on the saw to protect the sawyer from flying particles. 1910.265(e)(2)(iii)(c)
