DEFLAGRATION OF PYROTECHNIC MATERIAL

A PARTICULAR FORMULATION OF PYROTECHNIC MATERIAL WAS BEING TUMBLED IN A VACUUM DRYER. FOR SOME REASON THIS BATCH WOULD STICK TO THE SIDES AND NOT FALL OUT WHEN THE LOWER OPENING WAS REMOTELY OPENED. EMPLOYEE #3 HAD GONE INTO THE TUMBLER ROOM TO ATTEMPT TO PUSH IT OUT WITH A BROOM HANDLE. EMPLOYEE #2 WENT IN TO HELP. EMPLOYEE #1 TOLD EMPLOYEE #6 THAT THE BROOM HANDLE WAS INADEQUATE TO DO THE JOB. EMPLOYEE #1 OBTAINED A LONG-HANDLED BRASS SCRAPER, CLIMBED TO THE TOP OF THE TUMBLER AND STARTED SCRAPING THE MATERIAL OUT. AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED. EMPLOYEES #4 - #7 WERE INJURED FROM FALLING OR BEING KNOCKED FROM A STOOL BY FALLING CEILING MATERIAL. EMPLOYEE #8 WAS IN A SEPARATE BUILDING. SHE OBSERVED THE DEFLAGRATION AND FAINTED. SINCE SHE WAS 5 MONTHS PREGNANT SHE WAS ALSO HOSPITALIZED.
