Mosquito-borne Diseases

Control Prevention - General Guidance for Outdoor Workers

  • Apply insect repellent to uncovered skin according to manufacturer's instructions. In tropical or sub-tropical locations, consider using repellent spray on clothing.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to cover as much skin as possible.
  • Eliminate or reduce the likelihood of water accumulation by removing debris and covering items and equipment where water can pool. If open water sources are needed for work tasks, add oil or soap to the surface if possible.
  • Take preventative measures if you are working overseas where mosquito-borne diseases are common. Talk to your healthcare provider about vaccines that may be required or preventative measures that can be taken to prevent mosquito-borne disease in your travel location.
