During Use: Fall Protection
SWP 2. Use Standard Guardrails Where Appropriate

Standard guardrails are always preferable to personal fall protection systems.

A guardrail prevents falls from occurring, thereby reducing the potential for a worker to be injured if he or she is only protected by a personal fall arrest system by itself.

Key Point Whenever practical, use standard guardrails with rigid top and middle rails for all open sides of the staging when the fall distance to a lower level exceeds 5 feet [29 CFR Part 1915.71(j)(1)]. Where the use of guardrails is not possible, due to the structure of the vessel, fall protection must be used to protect workers [29 CFR Part 1915.71(j)(3)].
