ACTION: Final Rule.

SUMMARY: This final rule revokes 153 of the 194 provisions of the General-Industry Standards (19 CFR Part 1910) which were proposed for revocation on May 28, 1982 (47 FR 23477).

Application by the Chlorine Institute, Inc. on behalf of its members
for a permanent variance from 1910.134(b)(11). Variance is sought
that would allow mouthpiece respirators as a limited alternative to
the use of half-mask respirators in chlorine producing facilities.
Comments and request for a hearing must be received by July 18, 1985.

OSHA proposes to modify the existing provisions for controlling
employee exposures to toxic substances found in 1910.1000(e) and
1910. 134(a)(1). OSHA proposes to incorporate additional flexibility
in its methods of compliance requirements by more explicitly setting
forth the circumstances under which respiratory protection may be
used in lieu of engineering controls.
