Iowa On-Site Consultation Works to Make Construction Sites Safer

Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, & Licensing

In 2021, the Iowa On-Site Consultation Program (Iowa Consultation) began working with a general contractor based in Des Moines, Iowa. The general contractor requested Iowa Consultation to provide visits through each phase of several construction projects. Each phase brought new sub-contractors to the jobsites. Iowa Consultation educated each sub-contractor on hazard awareness and helped the general contractor continue to enhance its safety practices.

Iowa Consultation was a valuable resource as this general contractor reviewed and improved its safety measures. Iowa Consultation offered tailored consultations and recommendations to address specific safety concerns at each jobsite they visited. The recommendations were based on OSHA regulations and also on best practices in the construction industry. Each jobsite has unique challenges such as steel erection or welding and common construction hazards such as falls, caught-in, electrical, and struck-by.

The company credits its relationship with Iowa Consultation as playing a pivotal role in achieving a milestone of zero lost-time injuries since October 2021. This is a testament to the effectiveness of working with Iowa Consultation, management's commitment, and employee involvement all working toward a common goal. By embracing safety as an ongoing process and instilling this mindset throughout the organization, the company demonstrated that it prioritizes the well-being of its workforce and also positioned itself as a leader in creating a safer and more productive work environment. The company has received 10 on-site consultation visits to 5 different construction sites within 28 months. During these visits, Iowa Consultation identified 42 hazards and conducted health monitoring. The company completed all corrective actions within the allotted time frame.

The OSHA On-Site Consultation Program offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to identify workplace hazards and how to fix them, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, train and educate workers, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs. On-Site Consultation services are separate from OSHA enforcement efforts and do not result in penalties or citations.
