Two Employees Suffer Chemical Burns from Sulfuric Acid

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on February 12, 2014, Employees #1 and #2 were working together to put an out-of-service sampling station back into service. Employee #1 was turning a gate valve to open the flow line of a sulfuric acid solution when it released suddenly due to an improperly seated ferrule on a compression fitting union. He received a superficial chemical burn near his hairline, face, and neck, and Employee #2 suffered lesions to the face and neck area due to contact with sulfuric acid.
