Employee Injures Back While Assisting a Hospital Patient

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on April 4, 2012, Employee #1 was adjusting the position of a neuro patient in bed because he had slid down. The patient was in a recline position at an angle of approximately thirty degrees. Due to medical reasons, the patient's recline position could not be lowered so that he was flat. Employee #1 requested the assistance of three other nurses to assist her. Two employees were positioned on either side of the patient's bed at the hip and shoulder level, with Employee #1 at shoulder level. They were using a draw sheet to move the patient up. As they were pulling, Employee #1 felt a "tweek" in her lower back. She went home that night due to the discomfort and underwent surgery approximately four months later.
