Meat Packer Amputes Fingers in Vacuum Packaging Machine

On March 25, 2011, Employee #1, a 35-year-old female with Morasch Meats Inc, was at the end of her shift and was preparing a meat vacuum packaging machine for cleaning by the cleaning crew. Employee #1 raised the machines' "hood" and placed her hands into the cutting area and exit tube to clean out pieces of meat. While her right hand and fingers were in the tube area the machine "turned on" and amputated the middle and ring finger of her right hand. Employee #1 immediately walked to the break room area to report the injury, and Emergency medical services were summoned. Employee #1 was transported to Emanuel Hospital Portland OR for treatment and overnight stay.
