Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200264109
Event: 12/22/2010
Logger Dies after Being Struck in the Head by Tree

On December 22, 2010, Employee #1 was working for a logging firm. Using a knuckle boom loader and shear equipment, a coworker of his was cutting the limbs from two hardwood trees approximately twelve to thirteen inches in diameter and 40 to 50 feet long. As the coworker was pulling the trees through the shearing equipment with their opposite ends still in the grapple of the knuckle boom loader, the bottom tree pushed the top tree approximately 15 feet straight up in the air. Then, the top tree made a 90 degree turn and struck Employee #1, who was in the area manually trimming limbs, on the top of the head. Employee #1 fell to the ground and stopped breathing. Medical personnel transported Employee #1 to the local hospital. Later, Employee #1 was air lifted from the local hospital to Louisiana State University Hospital, where he was placed on life support. Later, he was taken off life support, and he died.
