Employee Is Injured When Struck by Falling Pallets

At 11:00 a.m. on April 16, 2012, Employee #1 was a yard worker at the facility of a used pallet buyer and seller with three employees. Employee #1 had been working there for three weeks, performing the duties of a yard worker, including buying, sorting, stacking, loading pallets, and keeping the yard clean. There were no witnesses to the injury. Employee #1 was seen under a pile of pallets by employees at an adjacent business who called Emergency Services. Employee #1 was treated and transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Conditions at the scene indicated that a stack of pallets tipped over and fell on the injured employee. Employee #1 was not working in close proximity to anyone else. Interviews were conducted with the business owner who was not at the location at the time of the injuries. The owner had worked at the location with Employee #1 and said he always worked safe and he knew what he was doing. Employee #1 suffered head trauma due to being struck by the falling pallets and was transported and admitted to Los Angeles County, USC Medical Center for treatment.
