Food Worker Amputates Finger Operating Wrapping Machine

On June 22, 2011, Employee #1 was working with a wrapping machine that wraps pocket sandwiches at a food processing facility. She attempted to unjam the wrapping machine, but she got her finger caught under the blade which seals and cuts the plastic wrapping. Employee #1 did not follow the company procedures for unjamming the machine. She placed her finger in the danger zone, and the blade of the machine apparently rotated even though the machine was shut down. Employee #1's left middle finger was amputated up to the first joint.
