Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202470530
Event: 05/12/2011
Employee Receives Chemical Burns While Cleaning Oven

Between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on May 12, 2011, Employee #1 was cleaning an oven at a retail grocery store. She was using a degreaser sprayer that contained sodium hydroxide. While Employee #1 was kneeling on the ground, a coworker came over to talk with her. As Employee #1 stood up to talk with her coworker, the bottle of degreaser fell to the ground. This caused the nozzle to separate from the bottle and splash Employee #1's legs. Employee #1 quickly used a water hose to rinse her clothes and legs, then continued her work. When Employee #1 completed her shift at 9:15 p.m., she went home to take a shower; however, she was unable to remove her pants from her legs. Employee #1 immediately notified her supervisor and went to a nearby medical center, where she was hospitalized and treated for chemical burns. Five days later, Employee #1 was recommended to be seen at Sherman Oaks Burn Center. There, she was diagnosed as having third-degree chemical burns on both legs and was hospitalized for three days.
