Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201694460
Event: 07/29/2012
Worker Fractures Leg When Pinned Between Loader and Dolly

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on July 29, 2012, Employee #1, a 33-year-old male with Menzies Aviation, was working at LAX during the preparation of unloading a China Cargo Airliner. While waiting for the aircraft to be in position, tug operators were moving the carts into position on the tarmac. There was one large aircraft loader positioned approximately three feet in aisle way to the first row of dollies. Employee #1 was walking between the first row of dollies and the loader, when the first row dolly was clipped by a tug pulling in the second row of containers. When the row one dolly was clipped, it rolled sideways into Employee #1. His right leg was crushed between the loader and the moving dolly. Employee #1 was taken by paramedics to the Marina Del Rey hospital. Employee #1 suffered open tib-bib surgery from his right leg being crushed and was discharged from the hospital on August 10, 2012. Employee #1 was trained in every aspect of airport cargo handling. Menzies Aviation has since made equipment position changes. The space between the parked loader and the first row of dollies is now ten-feet. The employer acts as ground support for freighter airlines and passenger airlines.
