Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202491924
Event: 03/20/2011
Employee Fractures Pelvis in Fall from Tree

On March 20, 2011, Employee #1, a tree trimmer, was part of a 3-man crew that responded during a storm to the report of arcing of low voltage wires in an oak tree. They entered a residential yard and used a ladder to get over a fence and then used the same ladder to lean against the tree so the tree climber could gain access to the tree. Wearing a climbing saddle, gaffs, hard hat, gloves, and raingear, Employee #1 climbed the ladder several feet, using his gaffs, until he reached a crotch in the tree. He had not put his climbing rope into the tree prior to beginning the climb, and he fell 16 feet to the wet ground below. Emergency personnel arrived and transported Employee #1 to UC Davis Medical Center. He sustained a fractured left pelvis that required surgery and the insertion of 9 screws. Employee #1 was hospitalized for six days.
