Worker Cuts Fingers on Sheet Metal

On July 31, 2012, Employee #1, a 51-year-old male Sheet Metal Worker with California Expanded Metal Products, was removing the accumulated side cut from the scrap winder. The end of the side cut was stuck on the eye it was threaded through, Employee #1 pulled on the side strap that was stuck in the eye and cut his two fingers. Employee #1 sustained lacerations to his right index and ring fingers. Employee #1 was wearing rubber gloves at the time. The side cut was roughly 1.5875 mm thick and was very sharp. The employee was taken John Muir Medical in Walnut Creek, where he was hospitalized and underwent surgery. OSHA was informed that Employees were instructed and required by the Employer to use channel lock pliers to pull on the side cut.
