Employee Amputates Finger in Chain Link

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on January 11, 2012, an employee and a coworker were moving a concrete block near the guard shed at the Gold Point Transportation Inc. yard. The employee placed a linked chain made up of three chains around the block and connected the end of the chain to the rear of a yard goat. As the employee was adjusting the chain around the concrete block, the coworker started the yard goat and pulled away tightening the chain around the concrete block and catching employee's right hand between the chain and concrete block. As the coworker pulled away, he heard the employee scream and he stopped the vehicle. The coworker stopped the vehicle and approached the employee and observed the injury. He notified management who called the emergency medical services. The Wilmington Fire Department transported the employee to Harbor UCLA. At Harbor UCLA, the employee was transferred to USC Medical Center. The employee was hospitalized and treated for the lacerations and crushing injuries to his right hand. The surgery included the amputation of the employee's right ring finger.
