Event: 06/29/2010
Worker Dies of Heart Attack after Harvesting Crops

At about 5:30 a.m. on June 29, 2010, Employee #1 reported to work at a red bell pepper farm in Thermal, CA, and began harvesting bell peppers. His employer was a farm labor contractor engaged in harvesting crops. Employee #1 stopped at 8:00 a.m. and took a 15-minute break to rest and drank water. He resumed harvesting bell peppers until approximately 10:30 a.m., when he took another break, this one an extended one for about 45 minutes. During this break period the foreman asked him several times if he was feeling well. Employee #1 responded that he was. The foreman stated that someone came in a car to the farm fields, picked up Employee #1, and drove him home. Later on in the evening, emergency services were called, and Employee #1 was taken to JFK Medical Center in Indio, CA, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 p.m. The cause of death was a heart attack, and the death was considered not to be a work-related fatality.
