Employee Amputates Fingers in Masa Pump

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on April 16, 2010, Employee #1, a quality control technician, was inspecting a masa pump during product change over. The machine was a disassembled and energized Waukesha Cherry-Burrell Model Number 130 masa pump on Production Line 1. During the inspection, Employee #1 placed her right hand in the pump to assure its cleanliness, when her middle and ring fingers contacted the moving rotors, which amputated them. Employee #1 was taken to Central Occupational Providers Clinic in San Bernardino, California, and then was referred to Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California for treatment. Employee #1 was discharged the next morning on April 17, 2010. The employer was primarily engaged in the manufacture of Mexican foods, including various types of corn and tortilla chips, for commercial outfits.
