Investigation Summary
On March 17th, 2010, Employee #1, a construction laborer of Cherry Valley Roofing Inc., was attempting to start the pump on a hot tar kettle when hot tar shot out of the kettle and landed on his hands and the back of his neck. The temperature of the asphalt tar was approximately 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Employee #1 was wearing safety glasses, safety shield, hard hat, long sleeve shirt, pants, boots, and gloves; however seconds prior to the accident he took his gloves off in order to pull start the pump motor. Employee #1 was first seen in the emergency room at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was admitted for high level of care for his burns. A skin graft to his left hand was performed.
