Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202456695
Event: 08/30/2010
Employee Crushes Hand in Machine and Receives Amputations

On August 30, 2010, Employee #1 was clearing a jam in a fiber blown machine known as the NOWO machine. The machine was turned off before clearing the jam, but the machine cycle did not come to an immediate stop. It instead gradually decelerated and eventually came to a stop. Employee #1 did not estimate the time needed for completion of the cycle and used his hand to clean the cards while they moved. As he cleaned the cards, his right hand was caught by them and crushed. Emergency medical personnel were summoned. Employee #1 was transported to a medical center where he received medical attention and was hospitalized for injuries that included amputations.
