Employee Is Injured When Hand Caught by Wire Brush Grinder

On September 5, 2009, Employee #1, a maintenance supervisor, was building a new gate that consisted of metal tubing. After cutting sections of tubing to length, Employee #1 would polish each end using a wire brush mounted on a stationary grinder in their shop. With the wire brush revolving, Employee #1 positioned a section of tubing near the wire brush and placed his gloved right hand near the end of the tubing to help guide it as the brush polished it. The glove came in contact with the wire brush, and it drew his right hand into the brush. Employee #1 was able to pull his hand free, but the leather glove was severely damaged and the first finger of his right hand was severely injured. Employee #1 was transported to Methodist Hospital in Sacramento by his supervisor, and the tip of his finger was surgically amputated at the hospital.
