Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202489555
Event: 07/20/2009
Employee Fractures Leg in Fall from Tractor

On July 20, 2009, Employee #1, a farm worker who was driving a tractor, stopped the tractor in an open area near an orchard. Attached to the tractor was a small trailer with a diesel storage tank on it. Employee #1 was supposed to transfer fuel from the trailer mounted tank to another tank at the site. After stopping the tractor, Employee #1 put the tractor into neutral and dismounted the tractor on the driver's side. Employee #1 could not recall whether he set the parking brake before dismounting. As soon as he set his foot on the ground, the tractor began to move in reverse with the front tire first catching Employee #1's right foot. Employee #1 lost consciousness and awoke with no one in the area. Employee #1 was able to reach his cell phone and call for help. Employee #1 sustained fractures to his left knee and femur (above knee) with surgery for the femur and possible surgery on the knee at a later date. The three middle toes on the right foot were fractured and pins temporarily inserted as well as additional fractures on the right foot behind the toes. He also sustained fractures on the left side of his face including just below his left eye socket and on the side of his face. There was no apparent impact on his sight from the eye. Employee #1 was hospitalized for 16 days.
