Employee's Skull Is Fractured When Struck by Wood

On January 19, 2010, Employee #1 was performing quality control duties on a plumbing project. Employee #1 was travelling to a bathroom located outside of the building, when he exited an open metal double door marked by an illuminated exit sign. Immediately outside the threshold, a scaffold stood approximately ten levels or 70 feet high. Employee #1 crossed under the scaffold and when he was approximately 14 feet away from the scaffold, he was struck in the head with a piece of 12 inch by 10.125 inch by 1.25 inch scaffold planking wood. The wood had been thrown off the ninth level of scaffolding, which was slightly higher than the fifth floor, by a coworker. Employee #1 was transported to University of California Irvine in Orange, California, where he was hospitalized and treated for a head injury with multiple skull fractures. The incident occurred at the extreme southeast corner of The Crossing at Anaheim construction site at 8:55 a.m.
