Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201345204
Event: 10/21/2009
Employee's Leg Is Caught in Auger and Is Amputated

At 10:30 a.m. on October 21, 2009, Employee #1, a machine/field operator, had performed his normal task of unloading soybeans from a farmer's truck to the Hutchinson hopper auger. Apparently, as Employee #1 was cleaning and scooping out the back of the truck, he slipped through the opening hole and got caught in between the blades of the running auger. Employee #1 sustained severe lacerations, and his right leg was subsequently amputated. The farmer, who was dumping soybeans from his truck, did not see what happened. Other employees, who were working on the conveyor belt, approximately 300 feet away, heard screaming and ran over. They saw Employee #1 lying on the ground and turned off the auger. Someone called EMS and the Sherriff, who responded within minutes. They took Employee #1 by ambulance to Newman Regional Health in Emporia. A helicopter then took Employee #1 to KU Medical Center in Kansas City, and he was hospitalized.
