Employee Is Struck and Pinned by Slab of Stone, Is Killed

At approximately 2:45 pm on March 16, 2009, Employee #1 and coworkers were moving cut limestone end sections (roughbacks) from the saw bed in a main mill building. They were removing the finished cut sections (meat) of limestone from the cutting line with an overhead 20 ton crane using two wire rope slings. One stone roughback, weighing approximately 6,000 lbs., fell over, hitting Employee #1 at shoulder blade height. The stone pushed Employee #1 into another stone roughback before settling on top of him. Employee #1 was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
