Investigation Summary

Employee #1 was a sorter at a sorting table on a production line at a poultry processing plant in Livingston, CA. Employee #1 was standing at her assigned station, when a box of chicken waste parts hit her from behind, injuring her back and pushing her into the sorting table in front of her, which caused an abdominal contusion. The box was on a cart being pushed by a sanitation employee who was not paying attention and ran into Employee #1. She was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital in Turlock, CA, where she was evaluated, medically treated, and released the same day. Employee #1 was approximately 10 to 12 weeks pregnant at the time she sustained the back and abdominal injury. Employee #1 sustained a miscarriage a couple of days after the injury and alleged the injury caused her miscarriage. A medical review by Hazard Evaluation System and Information System was performed to evaluate her allegation regarding the miscarriage. Investigation resulted in no citations being issued to the employer.
