Event: 07/27/2009
Employees Are Burned in Explosion

On July 27, 2009, two laboratory employees, Employee #1 and Employee #2, were assisting a delivery driver (Employee #3) unloading a delivery of lab grade chemicals. The employees noted while unloading the shipment that one 5-gallon metal canister of Petroleum Ether was bulging on the top and bottom. As a result, the employees attempted to move the container inside the facility when the canister vented flammable vapors that were ignited. Multiple ignition sources were present inside the facility. Minor structural damage occurred as a result of the explosion. Fires caused by the explosion were suppressed with fire extinguishers located onsite. All three employees suffered burns and were hospitalized
