Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 311867980
Event: 01/26/2009
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Stationary Truck

On January 26, 2009, Employee #1, a transfer station attendant with the County of Nevada, returned with a coworker to a transfer station. They backed their pickup truck to the sidewalk adjacent to a tipping floor. The sidewalk portion is elevated to allow citizens to throw debris onto the tipping floor. The elevated area is protected by a yellow guardrail with a single horizontal railing. With pickup's tailgate down, Employee #1 removed a bag of trash from the truck and threw it underneath the railing onto the tipping floor below. As he did this, he felt a pain in his leg, slipped, slid underneath the railing, and fell face-down on the tipping floor with his legs against a wall. Employee #1 was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was admitted for a fractured nose, injury to a leg tendon, and trauma to his spinal cord that that required subsequent surgery.
