Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202488011
Event: 10/13/2008
Employee's Hip Is Struck by Falling Bin

On October 13, Employee #1 walked near an elevated wooden bin that was being filled with almonds outside the company's almond huller. A trailer needed to be offloaded and an incline conveyor was placed under the trailer to accomplish the offloading. A coworker raised the bin with a forklift and positioned it under the conveyor to allow the almonds to fall into the bin. As the bin was filling, it suddenly flipped off the forklift and fell to the slab below, grazing the employee as he was passing by. Emergency personnel from the Arbuckle Fire Department arranged to have the employee airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The employee sustained heavy bruising of the hip/upper leg area as well as a hairline fracture of the sacrum. He was released the following day.
