Employee's Finger Is Amputated by Grafting Machine

On March 13, 2008, Employee #1, a farm worker, was grafting grape rootstock, using a manually operated grafting machine. The machine cut a small piece, which was then inserted back into the unit and attached to the rootstock. The grafting machine had a cutter that moved downward, when the employee struck a foot pedal, and then popped back up after the cut. Employee #1 placed a twig into the machine, which was mounted on a worktable. Employee #1 sustained an amputation to the tip of her right middle finger. A coworker transported Employee #1 to Woodland Memorial Hospital, and Employee #1 was released later that day.
