Worker Amputates Toes While Starting Double-Cutter Machine

"At approximately 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2008, Employee #1 was working in the maintenance shop area, and he attempted to start a Garlock Double Cutter machine by pulling the rip cord located at the front of the machine. Employee #1 stated, "That his left foot slipped off the front of the machine and went under the rotating blade on the side of the machine." Three of Employee #1 toes from his left foot were severed by this machine and his foot was pulled out of the work boot that he was wearing. Employee #1 was transported by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Unit at University of MD Hospital, where his toes were unable to be reattached and an additional toe was also removed."
