Employee Amputates Arm When Caught in Moving Machinery

Employee #1 was inspecting turkey necks after they fell onto a conveyor belt from the neck breaker machine. When the necks clogged the discharge chute of the neck breaker, Employee #1 reached into the chute from below to remove the necks lodged in the chute. When Employee #1 reached up into the chute, the sweep arm of the neck breaker caught his hand and wrist and pulled Employee #1 further into the chute. The sweep arm continued in motion breaking and separating Employee #1's right arm at the elbow. Other employees shut down the machine and notified the first responder team who arrived to provide first aid. Employee #1 was transported to the hospital where it was determined that the damage required permanent amputation just above the elbow. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
