Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 311068720
Event: 01/20/2008
Rotating Pneumatic Drill Motor Fractures Worker's Arm

A worker employed by an employment service was working for an industrial fabrication and machine shop. He was reaming exchanger baffles with an Ingersoll Rand pneumatic drill motor (Serial No. 37301) fitted with a reamer bit. According to the supervisor's first report of injury, this operation was to be performed by two workers, and the training for the operation stated, "use adequate man power to control the motor, even if it means two people." As the employee was performing the reaming operation, the drill motor began to wobble and the bit stuck. The motor continued rotating and lifted the employee off the ground and trapped his arm against the air-supply hose, fracturing the employee's right arm. The employee was hospitalized for his injuries, and his arm required pins as part of the surgical treatment of his fracture.
