Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201491305
Event: 10/06/2008
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Ladder

At approximately 1:50 p.m. on October 6, 2008, an employee placed his eighteen foot aluminum ladder on an area of a branch that was unable to support the weight of the ladder and the employee at the 15-ft height, where he would ultimately climb to pick the fruit. The branch snapped and twisted inward causing the employee to fall on his seat at a 45 degree angle relative to the ground. He was not moved for fear of internal injuries and therefore remained in the prone position at the site of the fall until the paramedics arrived. Emergency Medical treatment personnel secured his body and placed him on a gurney and he was transported by ambulance to Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia and later that same day to Fresno Community Regional Medical Center. The employee sustained temporary loss of consciousness, lumbar transverse fractures, traumatic brain and urological injuries for which he was hospitalized.
