Employee Amputates Thumb in Conveyor

At approximately 5:00 a.m. on October 8, 2008, an employee was picking up cans on the ground in the Palletizer Discharge Area that were near Palletizer 2-4, Unit Number 2, by an unguarded chain and sprocket drive that was stopped. The chain drive suddenly started, and her right thumb got caught into the chain and sprocket. The tip of her thumb was amputated. The employee sustained bone and tissue loss of her right thumb. The paramedics arrived and transported the employee to UCSD Medical Center for treatment. Surgery was completed in about seven hours, and she was not in the hospital for an overnight stay.
