Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201072907
Event: 07/11/2008
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Building

On July 11, 2008, Employee #1, a 42-year-old framer who was working for a framing contractor on a job site in San Diego, was preparing to install joists in a building. Fourteen wood frame buildings, containing 254 residential apartments, were being built at the site. Five of the buildings had three stories, and the remainder had two stories. Employee #1, who was not wearing a fall protection harness, was working on the second floor, above the breezeway, where exterior stairs were to be eventually installed. He was using his tape measure to take measurements, as he was walking backward on the top cap of the second floor. At approximately 8:15, a.m., he tripped on a vertical beam and fell 19 feet, landing on his back, in the dirt. Employee #1 was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he underwent treatment for a fractured arm and injured pelvis. He was hospitalized for more than 24 hours.
