Investigation Summary
At 9:15 a.m. on December 11, 2007, Employee #1 was installing ceiling drywall at the multipurpose/auditorium building on the UCSD campus in La Jolla, CA. He was inside a window opening, standing on a 2 ft tall portable stepladder, and equipped with a tool belt, drywall gun, cutting knife, compass, level, screws, and a hammer. Employee #1 was leaning over the 42 in. tall wall when he lost his balance and fell 17 ft through the window opening, striking a scissor lift as he dropped. He clutched at the rail of the scissor lift, which swung him around and slowed his fall before he struck the concrete deck. Paramedics transported Employee #1 to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he underwent surgery and was hospitalized for six days. Employee #1 was left with pain in his left arm and waist.
