Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 310813019
Event: 07/30/2007
Employee suffers from heat stress

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on July 30, 2007, Employee #1, of Continental Marble and Tile, was on his first day working for a subcontractor at a school construction site in El Centro, CA. He had been grouting and setting tile in a small, unfinished, enclosed bathroom when his hands started cramping up and he felt faint. Coworkers noticed his condition and called paramedics. He was moved into a cool, air conditioned trailer and given water until the paramedics arrived. Employee #1 was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted for treatment for heat stress. Employee #1 had complained of feeling poorly throughout the day, with this condition gradually getting worse. The bathroom had fans, but warm air accumulated in the space due to the lack of ventilation or air conditioning. Employee #1 had just started work on the job in El Centro on that day and was not been totally acclimated to the high heat.
