Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200881415
Event: 11/24/2007
Employee Is Struck by Tree and Is Killed

Employee #1 had cut a 22-in. diameter, approximately 70-ft tall Hemlock tree which hung up in another tree. The trees being cut were located on the side of a hill which had a slope of approximately 45-degrees. A skidder cable was attached approximately 2.5-ft above the butt end. The skidder was parked approximately 95-ft down the slope on the edge of a skidder trail. As a coworker was winching the first tree down towards the skidder, the butt end of the tree slid down the hill causing the cable to go slack. The butt of the first tree then hit the stump of a previously cut tree, which caused the tree to stop sliding. The cable then went taunt which pulled on a dead stump. The stump was propelled 90-degrees in the direction of the skid. Employee #1 had been standing 55 ft below the stump of the tree and 24 ft laterally from the stump. The dead tree struck Employee #1 causing blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Employee #1 was killed.
