Investigation Summary
On April 1, 2008, Employee #1, who worked as a correctional counselor III at the ER1 facility in Norco, CA, was admitted and hospitalized for 10 days with pneumonia caused by a methicillin- resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. Employee #1 worked as a liaison between the Substance Abuse Programs and ER1 and his normal work involved occasionally meeting directly with inmates. ER1 is a California correctional facility that offers substance abuse counseling for inmates. No specific incident or exposure was identified. Employee #1 denied direct close contact with any inmate or inmate apparel or property. He also denied that any of his family or nonwork contacts have been identified with a MRSA infection. The Doctor's First Report of Occupational Injury/Illness stated that it was medically plausible that Employee #1 could have acquired this infection as the result of an exposure at work. ER1 would generally accept MRSA infections in employees working at correctional institutions with any possible contact with inmates as work-related.
