Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202448387
Event: 02/07/2008
Worker Fractures Ribs in Fall from Tree

At approximately 1:35 p.m. on February 7, 2008, Employee #1 was working for the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino, in California. He was trimming the trees at an 89-unit public housing facility. Employee #1 would generally use an aerial lift to trim the trees, but the courtyard of the complex dictated that an aerial lift could not be used. He decided to use a 3.4-meter (11-foot) aluminum extension ladder instead. He used his left hand to climb, while holding a power saw in his right hand. Employee #1 was trimming a tree, when a branch fell and hit him on his right leg. He exited the extension ladder and steeped onto the tree. He fell 4.0 meters (13 feet) onto the ground. Employee #1 was initially taken to Barstow Hospital. He was then transferred to Loma Linda University Hospital, where he was hospitalied for 8 days with three broken ribs and a bruised lung.
