Event: 06/29/2007
Employee Amputates Thumb While Operating Winder

At approximately 2:45 p.m. on June 29, 2007, the film on a single turret surface center stretch film winder (Battenfeld Gloucester, Model Number 1022-S, Serial Number 37752-34) was not being cut properly, so Employee #1, the winder operator, attempted to adjust the trim blade position by turning the positioning bolt inside the still running machine with his right hand. When Employee #1 completed the task and pulled his hand out of the machine, it contacted one of the screws holding a turning pulley. The pulley was part of an unguarded belt and pulley assembly located between 3 and 4 feet above the work floor. Employee #1 amputated his right thumb and was transported to the hospital.
