Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200012581
Event: 12/07/2006
Building Collapses, No Injuries

Late in the afternoon on December 7, 2006, a building partially collapsed in the downtown area of Washington, Missouri. The building was being remodeled to include a business area on the first floor and an apartment on the upper floor. The interior of the building had been demolished, including the removal of the first and second floors. Workers subsequently dug out the basement floor going below the footing of the building. Eleven people had just left work for the day approximately twenty minutes before the collapse. Those workers had been pouring a new footing along two sides of the basement approximately 4 ft below the original footing of the basement. The entire city block was evacuated due to fears of further collapse. No one was injured in this accident.
