Investigation Summary
At approximately 2:15 p.m. on May 20, 2009, Employee #1 was using a circular power saw to cut wood into a specified shape, which would be used for making figures on concrete. He held a piece of wood that was 2 in. thick by 6 in. wide by 14 in. long in his left hand, while his left thumb lifted the saw guard. As he started cutting the wood, the saw rapidly kicked back from the wood, which caused him to lose control of the saw. The base of his thumb contacted the saw's blade, severely lacerating it. He was transported to Harbor UCLA medical center, and then transferred and admitted to Queen of the Valley hospital for surgery. After undergoing surgery, he was hospitalized for three days.
