Employee Amputates Finger When Caught in Chain and Sprocket

At approximately 5:00 a.m. on June 2, 2007, Employee #1 was working at Fryer Line 1 of the production area. He was working alone, sanitizing the transfer conveyor that is part of the production line. Although he was not familiar with the cleaning of this type of machine, he was directed to clean the chain and sprocket of the hydraulically powered transfer conveyor unit. He lifted up the existing adjustable metal guard and used a low flow water pressure hose to wash down and clean off the food debris from the moving chain and sprocket assembly; As he cleaned the conveyor, Employee #1 caught his right index finger between the chain and sprocket mechanism, resulting in the amputation and fracture of his right index finger. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
