Investigation Summary
On May 5, 2009, Employee #1 was operating one of two wood splitters in the yard, cutting the wood for firewood. This was his usual duty. The wood splitter consists of a horizontal blade approximately 2-ft long and about 6-in. high, operated by a hydraulic piston. The employee positions the log to be cut beneath the raised blade, then pushes the splitter's operating lever down, to lower the blade to split the wood. While splitting one log, Employee #1's right index finger was too close to the blade, and the splitter blade came down on his fingertip, amputating it at the first knuckle. Employee #1 was taken to a local medical center, where he was treated for his amputation, but was not hospitalized.
