Employee Fractures Pelvis in Trench Collapse

On May 8, 2008, Employee #1, a foreman, was working for a subcontractor. The contractor was responsible for excavating and placing the main sewer line in the middle of an existing street. The subcontractor was responsible for placing manhole laterals off the main sewer pipe. The excavation was about 12 to 15 feet deep, in Class C soil. Employee #1 was attempting to place formwork to make the manhole housing when part of the side of the trench collapsed. Employee #1 was taken to St. John's Hospital with a fractured pelvis, where he stayed for five days for treatment.
