Employee Gets Finger Amputation While Using a Saw

On February 29, 2008, Employee #1 was working as a "Stone Fabricator" operating the "FOMA" stone splitting saw. Employee #1 was feeding blocks of limestone, measuring 12 " high by 24" inches long. The procedure he followed was to place the block on the conveyor belt and hold it with a large stick until the piece comes in contact with the blade. The piece goes through the blade, cutting to a depth of about six inches. He then flips the piece over and feeds it through the saw again to cut the remaining bottom portion and split the block. Employee #1's right index finger came in contact with the moving blade when he reached to take the piece of limestone off the conveyor belt. Employee #1 was taken by the Supervisor to St. Joseph's Hospital, Burbank. The tip of the employee's right index finger was amputated with some bone loss. He was hospitalized overnight and required surgery to repair the finger.
