Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202465845
Event: 10/17/2007
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Tree

At approximately 11:20 a.m. on October 17, 2007, Employee #1, a hotel groundskeeper, was working with a crew of four employees, assigned to trim trees in a courtyard of the hotel. The other coworkers were using the working surface of the hotel balcony, a ladder or a scissor lift to access the branches to cut. Employee #1 climbed a ficus tree to cut the branches. The branch that Employee #1 was standing on broke and he fell 18.5 feet. A coworker, his brother, who had just come down from the balcony, looked up and grabbed him to reduce the force of the fall. Employee #1 sustained a left scapular fracture, as well as L1 and L2 fractures in his back. He was hospitalized for more than 24 hours. No fall protection or aerial devices were used by Employee #1.
